Users start exploring alternatives as Google goes deeper into AI. The rise in DuckDuckGo search installs surge after Google AI update shows a familiar pattern — Google changes Search, users start checking what else is out there.
DuckDuckGo reported a “sustained surge” in US installs after Google’s I/O event, where the company doubled down on AI-powered Search. App installs in the US rose 18.1% on average over six days, peaking at 30.5% on May 25.
Most of the growth came from iPhone users, with iOS installs jumping 33% week-on-week and hitting nearly 70% on peak day.
In short: Google upgraded Search, and some users quietly hit the App Store.
TL;DR
- DuckDuckGo installs surged after Google’s AI Search update
- US iPhone installs peaked at ~70% growth on peak day
- Web traffic to no-AI search also increased
- Google is turning Search into an AI agent system
- Users are exploring alternatives with more control over AI
Even Web Traffic Followed the Same Pattern
DuckDuckGo also saw increased activity on its no-AI search page, noai.duckduckgo.com, which rose 22.7% week-on-week and peaked at 27.7%.
The company says the spike was stronger in the US than globally, suggesting the reaction was tied directly to Google’s AI-focused announcements rather than general global curiosity.
Google’s AI Search Is Now Doing… Everything
At Google I/O 2026, Google introduced an upgraded Search experience built around an “Intelligent Search Box.”
It can now handle complex prompts, videos, images, files, and even Chrome tabs; basically turning Search into something closer to an AI workspace than a search bar.
Google also introduced AI agents that can track information in the background and push updates without users actively searching.
Search is no longer just “searching.” It’s now “delegating.”
The Reaction Was Predictable
Online discussions, especially on Reddit, showed a noticeable shift toward privacy-focused or AI-light alternatives.
DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg said users are reacting to “forced AI integration” in Search and the lack of simple opt-out controls.
DuckDuckGo itself does offer AI features — but unlike Google, they can be turned off completely, or avoided entirely through its no-AI mode.
So the pitch is simple: AI if you want it. Silence if you don’t.mmediately became a deeply emotional event for parts of the internet.
